2024 Year in Data - Entertainment
Watching
This year, I watched 55 movies, which is more than last year. That’s 114 hours of my life. Some of my highest-rated movies included Dune Part 2, Challengers, Wolf of Wall Street, and The Holdovers. My lowest-rated movie of the year? Madam Web. I imagine that wouldn’t surprise many people.
Of course, not all of the movies I watched came this year, but 65% of the movies I watched were new to me. Because I rewatched all the Harry Potter movies, the actors of those films were most prevalent in my watching. I also watched all the Daniel Craig Bond films and went on a kick of Jake Johnson movies in the year's first half. My most watched nano-genres continue to be focused on superheroes, but my highest rated include “comedy”, “romance”, “joke”, and “adorable”.
Not included here in those numbers or graphics is any of the television I’ve watched this year. I watched all of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon (to date). I braced through another year of mediocre superhero TV (although there were some standouts like The Penguin and Agatha All Along). The Bear also put out another season, which I continue to recommend.
Listening
I listened to 282 hours of music and 847 hours of podcasts this year (with a little bit of time left to drive those numbers up). I mentioned in last year’s review that I wasn’t able to share exact numbers for podcasts because my podcast app of choice, Overcast, didn’t show listening stats… well now they do!
On the music side, that’s 2,199 songs across 1,307 artists. My top artist continues to be Lawrence, and I once again made it into the top 1% of their listeners this year. The rest of my top five got shaken up though, with Connor Price making a non-surprising appearance (who I listen to when running) and two bands that often appear in my mixes, Lake Street Dive and Couch, coming in 3rd and 4th. Noah Kahan came in fifth, which was in part because I went to see him in concert this year at the Railbird Music Festival. Spotify was also able to pull out a couple of distinctive periods of my listening: Wild West Slow Dance Country (in March when I was going through a breakup), and Academic Permanent Wave Rock (in September when I was training for a race).
On the podcast side, I was surprised to see Ringerverse and House of R beat out all of my tech podcasts. In fact, several other things beat out the Relay shows as well. That might change if I showed the number of episodes though; House of R especially tends to run long. This also doesn’t account for the fact that I often listen to ATP, Upgrade, and Connected live.
